Common Name: Hosta, Plantain Lily
Puckered, deeply ridged, blue-green leaves give shade gardens and mixed container plantings a unique look. Pale purple flowers open above the foliage in midsummer. Growing 30″ tall, Bressingham Blue Hosta is an easy-care shade perennial.
The blue appearance is a natural optical phenomenon rather than actual pigmentation. A protective waxy layer known as glaucous bloom coats each leaf surface, functioning as a light-scattering mechanism that preferentially reflects blue wavelengths while the underlying foliage remains deep green.
This interplay between the reflective coating and the base leaf color creates the striking blue-toned aesthetic that makes Bressingham Blue a standout specimen in shade gardens.
Tip: To maximize blue color, plant in full shade, use drip/soaker irrigation, and choose top blue cultivars. Cooler temps will definitely help. Too much direct sun in the summer can melt the waxy layer causing the color to revert to green.
